Blood Oath – Cover Love

Cover Love

Like the cover of Blood Road, the first book of the duology, Blood Oath’s cover is bold and eye-catching, and I appreciate the way the designer, Monika MacFarlane, made sure the cover reflected the “Roman” feel of Torien’s world while giving it its own unique flair. I also like the way the laurel wreath motif continues in the interior design, at section breaks and chapter headings.

It’s always tricky to put a character on the cover, and although the model isn’t exactly how I picture Torien, I certainly think Torien could be pictured this way! All in all, I very much appreciate Monika’s thoughtful work in bringing all these elements together to create a striking cover.

As the threat of mutiny builds, the mission seems doomed before they even reach Tasso—and Torien is beginning to suspect it was meant that way. He and his men are being set up to fail.

Burning Bright – Excerpt

Burning Bright by Chris Cannon Excerpts

Excerpt #1

“I think we are at the no-news-is-good-news stage,” Jaxon said.

“That works for me.” Bryn said. “I’m hoping my chaos magnet days are over. I’d love an uneventful holiday season.” “The Christmas Ball should be safer this year. Your grandfather has hired extra guards and installed more surveillance cameras around the estate.”
“That’s comforting, but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to relax and believe an event is safe.”

“I feel compelled to point out that the common denominator among all the recent chaos has been you.”

“And you get to spend the rest of your life with me,” Bryn shot back. “You lucky duck.”

“I can barely contain my joy.”

They drove back to the Institute for Excellence trading comments and laughing. It was nice. On the way to her room, he said, “Do you still have the present I asked you to keep for me?”

Way to put a damper on the day. “I do.” Where is he going with this?

“Can I have it back?” he asked.

“Of course.” She unlocked her door, letting him into the living room and then went to retrieve the bracelet from underneath her sweaters. Should she admit she’d looked at it? No.

Jaxon accepted the box from her and held it in his palm like he was testing its weight. “I finally figured out what I should do with it.” He slid it into his coat pocket and then said, “I almost forgot.” He pulled a small white cardboard box from his pocket and handed it to her.

“What’s this?” She opened the box and looked inside to find brownies dotted with green Christmas tree-shaped sprinkles.

“I stopped in a bakery to order something for my mother, and I saw those.”

That was oddly thoughtful of him.

“I know normal girls wouldn’t want to eat brownies after baking cookies all day, but I figured that didn’t apply to you.”

“It’s not like I can argue that statement, so thank you.”

“Good night, Bryn.”

“Good night.” She locked the door behind him before taking a bite of brownie. It was chocolatey fudgey heaven. A small voice in her head whispered that he must actually care about her. The smarter part of her brain said to shut up and enjoy the brownie. No reason to read anything even remotely romantic into the nice gesture.

Bryn stopped mid chew. Wait. What? Did she just think of romance and Jaxon in the same sentence? Sure, he was funny, and smart, and handsome when he wasn’t being an asshat, but that didn’t mean there would ever be any real feelings between them. Right?

Excerpt #2

He stood. “Let’s go for a walk.”

“Okay.” She set her mug on the bench and let him pull her to her feet. Should she tell her grandparents where they were going? That would kind of ruin the moment she and Jaxon might be having, so she shelved the idea.

Hand in hand, they walked down one of the slate paths back into the trees with the fairy lights. “This place is amazing.”

“This has always been my favorite part of the house. I used to spend a lot of time out here.”

“Doing what?”

They walked down a path and into a stand of trees. Several single swings and a double swing where two people could sit, like a porch swing, were suspended from the trees. There was also a staircase that spiraled around a tree and led up to a walkway suspended between the trees, high up in the branches.

“Can we go up?” Bryn asked.
“Sure.”
The spiral steps were easy to climb, but the walkway was higher up in the trees than it appeared from below. “What do you think?” Jaxon asked.
“I think it’s the perfect place to hide from the world.”

Wait a minute. “You made fun of me last year when I said I wanted a treehouse.”

“This isn’t a treehouse, it’s a far superior tree bridge.”

“Right,” Bryn mocked. “That makes sense.”

Jaxon tugged her back toward the platform of the first tree. “There’s more.” Around the back side of the tree there was a bench. “If you don’t feel like walking, you can sit.”

“As one does when one is tired from adventures on their tree bridge.” She sat and relaxed back against the trunk of the tree, very aware of Jaxon’s proximity and the heat coming off his body.

“Exactly,” he said.

She laughed. From inside the tree the fairy lights seemed even more magical. “You know this is basically a tree house without walls.”

“No. That doesn’t work for me,” he said.
Bryn rolled her eyes but didn’t comment.
“I saw that,” Jaxon said.
“You were meant to.” Joking around with him felt comfortable. “This is nice.”
“The tree?” he asked.
“No.” She pointed back and forth between them. “This. Us. No pretenses or small talk…just us.”
“Speaking of us.” He leaned in, slowly, like he was giving her a chance to move away. She met him halfway and pressed her mouth against his. Time seemed to slow down as his hand touched her cheek and then cradled the back of her head. Heat thrummed between them, burning bright as the kiss grew, which was strange yet somehow right.

Excerpt #3

I guess I should say thank you for coming to look for me.”

“You’re welcome, though you seemed to have the situation taken care of by the time we got there.”

“Mostly,” he said. “But it’s nice to know that someone notices when I’m not where I’m supposed to be.”

And now this felt awkward and a little too serious. “I guess it really is our job to look out for each other now, isn’t it?”

He grinned. “I’d like to point out that I’m normally a lot less trouble than you are, so you’re getting the better end of this deal.”

She rolled her eyes. “Yes, I’m one lucky girl.”

He acknowledged her joke with a grin and then pushed to his feet. “Do try to remember that.” He walked to the door and let himself out.

She locked the door behind him. Weird how she felt closer to him now. Shared drama probably had that effect on a relationship. Whatever kind of relationship she had with Jaxon, it seemed to be shifting…which was natural given their strange circumstances. Nothing to worry about. Nothing at all.

by Chris Cannon
Publication Date: June 4, 2018

Publisher: Entangled Teen

Bryn is back for her senior year at the Institute for Excellence, also known as shape-shifting dragon school. Not that she could ever love him, either… That’s just ridiculous.

Senior year should be fun. Her parents are alive, she’s finally fitting in, and she’s learning how to be a Medic. But what’s with Jaxon giving her strange looks? He runs hot and cold, and he doesn’t even have the excuse of being a hybrid fire-and-ice-breathing dragon like her. One minute they’re having a great time and the next, she wants to blast a fireball at his head. The marriage contract of doom looms over them–unless this match not made in heaven kindles a flame…

Standley and Hazel – excerpt scene

This scene is one where Stanley’s right hand man and best pal, Arthur, is digging for information about the disappearance of some of the street kids in town. More about this will be revealed in Book 2.

Arthur tried to prevent his hands from trembling as he lit his cigarette. He wouldn’t show weakness to this pigeon. To anyone. Not even Stanley. But all of the info coming in reminded him of his pa and that night. That terrible night.

He breathed in the tobacco and blew out. The little kid watched him in awe.

Good, he thought. Exactly what I want.

“Look, kid, I need to know what’s going on. Tells me. Why all youse disappearing? What gives?”

The kid looked left and then right. He wiped his nose, glanced up at Arthur then down to the ground.

Fear, Arthur thought, I can almost smell it on him.

“Come on, cough it up, ya knob. Ain’t nothin’ to be afraid of.”

The kid looked up, tears coming out of his eyes. “That’s because you ain’t seen ‘em, Sir. You aint’ seen him. You don’t know.”

“Seen what? The coppers?”

The kid trembled and chewed on his frayed cuff. “Nah. Not the Coppers. I ain’t afraid o’ them.”

“The Raven’s guys?”

“Nah. Ain’t nothin’ more to fear from them than a bloody lip.”

Arthur chewed on his cigarette a little and said, “Listen, I’m gonna give you a bloody lip if you don’t spill.”

“Legion. They come for us. Out of the Shadows. And then we’re gone.”

“Gone? Gone where?” Arthur stuck his hands in his pockets.

“No one knows, sir, not really. But I heard them talk about an island. Bloody Island.”

Excerpt

Alex was drinking coffee and looking out at his backyard. He loved his home, his property. Living in the suburbs was something he had always wanted to do, and when he found this house, it had everything he needed—lots of green space and room for him to put in the pool he now had and the kind of landscaping that ensured his privacy. He wasn’t antisocial or trying to avoid his neighbors, but he had thought if he was able to work with clients out of the house, they’d appreciate the privacy.

With June almost here, the weather was starting to turn warm, and he’d opened up the pool the previous weekend. The water level was perfect, and so were the chemical levels. The pool was heated, and maybe in another week or two, he’d be able to start using it.

Off his back porch was a hot tub, and for now that worked fine.

He was considering changing and doing a little soaking when his phone rang. When he saw Megan’s name on the screen, he was pleasantly surprised.

“Hey,” he said when he answered and hoped his enthusiasm wasn’t too obvious.

“Oh my God, Alex,” she began breathlessly. “I’ve lost Maylene!”

“Um…what?” She immediately relayed what had gone on, and she was getting to the point of near hysteria. “It’s going to be all right.”

“You don’t understand, Alex! I had one job to do— one stupid job!—and I screwed it up. I have to find her, and I have no idea where to look!”

He was already grabbing his keys and locking up the house. “I’m on my way. I’ll be there in ten minutes, and I’ll be on the lookout for her as I drive over.”

“What do I do? Where do I even begin to look for her?” she cried.

“Go and grab her leash and start walking up one side of the block and then down the other. I’ll be there as soon as I can. I promise.”

He heard the shaky breath she let out. “I have to find her, Alex,” she said quietly. “I can’t believe I lost her.”

“You haven’t lost her, Megan. She’s a handful— Ethan talks about that all the time. She’s gotten out before, so we will find her. Trust me.”

“I…I don’t know…I’m not sure where to even start…”

At that moment, he hated how he wasn’t there already with her. He could hear the devastation in her voice and knew she was going to have a serious meltdown any minute. “Megan,” he said, his voice going firm and authoritative, “you need to do what I’m telling you. Get Maylene’s leash, and then start walking down the block to the right of the house. I have a feeling that’s the direction she’d go in first. Start there, and I’ll be there as fast as I can.”

That seemed to work because by the time she hung up, she sounded a little more in control of her emotions. Back when they had dated—and he used the term loosely—he had never seen Megan get emotional. She got frustrated, sure. But never emotional—never to the point of tears. And he wasn’t sure how to react to it. His initial response was…well…it made him like her a little more. It softened her and showed how she wasn’t as cold as she’d seemed when they had ended things.

That memory instantly got pushed aside because now was not the time to be focusing on it. The important thing right now was to get to her and help her find Maylene.

Luckily, traffic was on his side, and he didn’t hit any red lights and turned onto Summer’s block six minutes later. Alex immediately spotted Megan and pulled over, rolling down his window. “Megan! Hop in! We’ll hit the other side of the street now.”

Nodding, she quickly jogged over and climbed into the truck. It was pointless to ask if she’d had any luck— the simple fact that there wasn’t a dog on the end of the leash told him she hadn’t. He pulled over close to the right side of the road and drove slowly. They each called out to the dog as they went. After two blocks, Megan rested her head on the back of the seat and sighed loudly. He pulled over.

“It’s no use,” she said miserably. “She’s gone. She’s just…she’s gone! I’m going to have to break it to Summer that I lost her dog!” She looked over at him, her brown eyes brimming with tears. “She loves that dog! Do you have any idea how much this is going to kill her?”

Unfortunately, Alex did know how much Summer loved her dog, and no doubt this was going to be devastating for her. Reaching over, he took one of Megan’s hands in his and gently squeezed it. “We’re not giving up, okay? We’ll keep driving around. We’ll knock on doors. We’ll put up posters and post on social media if we have to. I’ll drive around all night if that’s what it takes. All is not lost here, okay?”

The hesitant look on her face told him she didn’t think it would do any good, but he refused to quit. Not after only two blocks! With her hand in his, he started driving and was relieved when she turned and called out to Maylene again.

They drove for several more blocks and then turned around and made their way up the other side. By the time they were back in front of Summer’s, Alex decided to pull into the driveway and park. “We’ll knock on doors now,” he said.

“Maybe we need to go off the block,” she suggested.

It was possible, he thought, but he had a feeling if they were on foot, they’d have more luck. “Why don’t you go and grab a handful of her treats? This way if we spot her and she thinks we’re playing, we can lure her over with a snack. What do you think?”

“Sounds good.” Megan took off up the driveway, and Alex watched her disappear around the back of the house and into the yard. A minute later, she called his name, and he quickly jogged back to her. At the gate, he spotted her pointing to the far corner of the deck. When he stepped closer, he started to chuckle. “Don’t you dare laugh.”

He knew she was trying to sound intimidating, but there was a hint of laughter in her own voice.

There, sitting in the corner of the deck in Ethan’s hammock, was Maylene—peacefully sunning herself. Alex glanced at the dog and then to Megan. “Um…”

“She was not there earlier. I swear.”

“Okay.”

“I’m serious, Alex! She didn’t come when I called her, and she wasn’t there when I brought the mail in and put it inside either of the houses. I heard her barking when I came out of the main house, but by the time I came out of mine, she was gone!”

“I believe you,” he said carefully and took a step closer to her. “I’m sure she was just playing with you.”

She shot him a bland look. “Seriously? That’s what you’re going with?”

He laughed a bit, unable to help himself. “I’m not sure what else I can say. The thing we should be focused on here is that she’s not lost. She’s home and in the yard, and even though I happen to know for a fact that Ethan doesn’t like her sitting in the hammock, it’s better than the alternative.”

Fractions of Existence – Blog Tour

I love the cover of Fractions of Existence because the location is hinted at in chapter 3.14, which is a short chapter that is important to the Existence series. The cover also features a drawing of two Fibonacci spirals twisting from the same point of origin, in a gold hue, which is the tattoo that marks the group of the main antagonists.

Road to Publication

The road to publication has many paths. I chose to walk along the small press path, which has worked well for me. I’ve been lucky enough to collaborate with some amazing and talented editors, cover designers, and marketing pros who’ve helped bring my work to new levels. The family type approach a small press offers really provided a nurturing feel, which was something I personally needed when starting out in the industry. There is no single right or wrong way to becoming published. I always encourage aspiring authors to do extensive research on all avenues available to them, whether it be self-publishing, small/indie presses, or the agent/big five pub route.

Deleted Scenes

Even though it was the middle of the night, people still wandered around the shops and food stands on the upper bridge. The heat had lessened a little, but the air still felt heavy and I tasted the dust with every breath I took. I felt an uneasiness in the crowd, as if everyone thought it was safer to stay awake and to keep moving.

I felt safer being out at night because we blended in better. Unless someone looked closely at us, they would just assume Mira and I were two more Far Edge trekkers who had come to Reyet for a little excitement, only to find ourselves trapped after the coup.

Mira grabbed my hand and pulled me over to a stand crowded with people. A fruity scent rose from the containers sitting on the counter. “Can we afford a couple of those?”

My stomach rumbled. If we ever got off Reyet, the first thing I planned to do was organize a feast for Mira and I.

“Yes, well, not really but we’re going to buy some anyway.”

The drink was heaven, smooth and cold made of something sweet that I couldn’t even describe. I sipped it slowly trying to make it last as we walked.

We passed an old man holding up circlets of tiny bells. “Charms for your sirls! Charms for your sirls! Soothe their spirits!” He had a sirl on the ground next to him with three or four of the circlets placed around the neck of the small statue. The statue didn’t look particularly soothed by the jewelry. Its two black circles meant to represent eyes stared out with a baleful expression.

Near him a bunch of Far Edge trekkers clustered around a woman seating on an upturned basket. A thin dust veil covered her entire face, so that her features were only smudges in the flickering firelight from the brazier next to her.

“There’s something that hides in the mists in the gorge,” she said in a low throaty voice. “It is what causes the burning inside the victims. It’s no disease at all.” The crowd murmured. She held up her hand to silence them. “The mists used to linger only down in the gorge, but they are rising bit by bit. Look for yourselves. You’ll see them.”

There was something about her voice that made me want to look so we moved with the group to the edge of the bridge. Even in the darkness down below I could see wisps of mist floating about, like they were being moved by a breeze we couldn’t feel.

“Are they ghosts?” someone asked, their voice shaking.

“No one knows what they are,” the woman said.

“Mira?” A man’s voice called.

I put my arm around her. “Let’s go,” I whispered, pulling her away from the voice. “Don’t react, because that will be a giveaway.”

“Mira? Wait.” The voice was louder.

I looked over at Mira. She nodded. We broke into a run.

Girl Vs by X. Culletto

Why You’ll Love this book

I believe anyone who’s a fan of The Hunger Games or The Fifth Wave will love this book. The elements of a worldly threat, complex moral dilemmas, and of course a kick-ass heroine are all there. I’ve had several readers tell me they didn’t like Rhyan much at the beginning of the story, but by the end, absolutely loved her. Rhyan’s character arc is natural, and there will be much more development of it in the sequel.
