Synopsis: Nikki Elliot is running out of money and time. After her year-and-a-half struggle of trying to rebuild her racing career from a near-fatal accident, Nikki is faced with some hard facts and hardships. Her family doesn’t want to support her, even though it’s her dream, and they fire her from their business. Nicki also needs money to rebuild her car and gets the help from Jake Masercotti. Even though he’s just her mechanic, they both become something more to each other. Secrets are uncovered, will they be able to live with some of their dead family members choices or will they let their choices control them?

Thoughts: The suspense and Mafia aspect of this book threw me for a loop, which I absolutely loved. Nikki is such an inspiration, going after what she wants and believes in. Jake is such a great character! I loved him so much, I loved everything he did and he stands for. The way that he treated Nikki was so refreshing and I love the author because of that. One of my favorite aspects was how Nikki was the race car driver and Jake was more of an artist who loved photography. Normally those rules will be reversed. Overall this was a fantastic read and I can’t wait to continue the series.

Blood Oath – Cover Love

Cover Love

Like the cover of Blood Road, the first book of the duology, Blood Oath’s cover is bold and eye-catching, and I appreciate the way the designer, Monika MacFarlane, made sure the cover reflected the “Roman” feel of Torien’s world while giving it its own unique flair. I also like the way the laurel wreath motif continues in the interior design, at section breaks and chapter headings.

It’s always tricky to put a character on the cover, and although the model isn’t exactly how I picture Torien, I certainly think Torien could be pictured this way! All in all, I very much appreciate Monika’s thoughtful work in bringing all these elements together to create a striking cover.

Summary:

Bitsy

I might be only nineteen, but I know what I want. It’s Leka Moore. I don’t care that he took me in when he was barely more than a kid himself. I don’t care that he raised me. I don’t care everyone thinks being with him is wrong. I know we belong together, and the only person I need to convince is him.

Leka

I found her in the corner of a dark alley. If I hadn’t taken her with me, she would’ve died that night—or maybe worse. Before I knew it, she became the light in my dark life, the haven from the madness. I watched her grow up. I tried to teach her right from wrong. Now that she’s an adult, I’m feeling things that no good man should ever feel. But then…I’ve never been a good man. I have a chance at redemption by saving her from the greatest danger of all—me.

May Wrap Up – 2018

EXCERPT:

“This life is not glamorous,” Duke told her. “We travel constantly. We sleep on the ground most nights. When we’re not in danger from storms, we’re in danger in cities where we are considered criminals. This life is not for the faint of heart.”

“There are things I do not know, things I will have to learn. But I am capable. I am familiar with sacrifice. I know what it is to make hard choices.”

“Tell me you’re not considering this,” Locke said to Duke.

The old man was silent for a long moment, both Locke and Roar looking to him for support. Duke rubbed at his mustache, a habit of his when he was thinking deeply. “Let’s think about this, Locke. She’s smart. And determined.”

“She’s a child.”

Roar’s shoulders hunched in Locke’s peripheral vision, and he swallowed back the guilt. He could apologize later. For now, it was imperative that he won this argument.

You were a child when I brought you into the fold,” Duke said. “She’s a young woman with a good head on her shoulders. And if this is what she wants, I’m inclined to at least hear her out.”

Just like that, Roar’s shoulders straightened, and Locke turned to watch a devastating smile bloom across her mouth. His weakness when it came to her only made him more cross.

“What skills do you have?” he snapped at Roar.

“Skills?”

“Yes, skills. What can you do? Or do you just plan to tag along for the ride?”

A flush spread over her cheeks, and her voice was tentative when she answered, “I’m good on a horse. Very good.”

Where in the world would she have learned to ride? He quickly hardened his expression. “Horses are fine for travel, but they don’t do well in storms. They, unlike you, have good survival instincts.”

As soon as the words were out of his mouth, Locke could have sworn he felt an updraft—the first sign that bad weather could occur—and he knew that this time he had pushed too far.

Roar marched toward him, spearing a finger into his chest and said, “I can read and write. I can speak Taraanese, Finlaghi, and Odilarian. I can read maps. I know enough about grassland vegetation and wildlife to survive without a market to buy food and drink. I’m good with knives and a bow. I learn quickly, and I’m not afraid of hard work. And I’ve spent my entire life reading as much about storms as I could get my hands on.” For a moment, her voice cracked under the weight of her anger, but she took a huffing breath and continued: “I’m good with numbers. It’s been a while, but I think I can probably still draw the constellations from memory, which should make me decent at navigation. I can—“

“Enough.” Locke’s voice came out in a deep rasp. He captured her long, delicate finger in his fist before she could continue poking him. He felt short of breath at the sight of her—livid and lovely. “Enough.”

The old Locke might have kept arguing, and Roar would have met him toe-to-toe. But if becoming a storm hunter had taught him anything, it was that fighting head-on wasn’t always the way to win. Sometimes strategy was required. He met Duke’s eyes over her shoulder, and if he had thought Roar looked smug before, she had nothing on his mentor. The man raised his eyebrows in a challenge and asked, “You?”

He hated the idea of bringing someone into this dangerous life, but if it was going to happen regardless, he sure as hell wouldn’t hand her safety over to anyone else, not even Ransom. And at the very least, it would give him the opportunity to change her mind. He gritted his teeth and nodded his acceptance.

Series: Sailor’s Grave #1

Release Date: May 17, 2018

About the book

“MOVING ON” IS JUST ABOUT ACTING THE PART.

I would never say as much to the people I love, but it’s the truth.

They want to see me doing better.

They want to see me living for more than just my son.

So I let them.

Everyday is about putting on a face,

pretending to get over the loss of my husband.

And every day is a lie.

UNTIL MOVING ON IS A TEMPTATION THAT CAN’T BE DENIED.

I’m not about to claim I’m a genius,

unless we’re talking with a tattoo gun or woman in my hands,

but I’m smart enough to know the beauty serving up my cupcake fix is off limits.

Really, I know.

Too bad the lure of putting a real smile on Kate’s face is so strong.

When she visits Sailor’s Grave Tattoo Parlor,

I can’t help but want to leave my mark.

EXCERPT

Liam

Christ, I really needed to stop doing this to myself.

Not give up the desserts, because fuck that, but stop torturing myself with the gorgeous woman that served them.

I knew the deal. She was a single mom, widowed a couple years back. She was under the protection of the club because Daz was her late husband’s brother. I also knew that despite conversations I’d overheard about her doing better, about her starting to move on, that she was nowhere near that place.

Maybe it was because I’d been old enough to understand everything as it happened when we’d lost Dad and after. I recognized what the people in her life couldn’t: that she wasn’t moving past a goddamn thing.

It was achingly familiar, seeing that fake smile. It was even more so to see the one she gave her son, knowing that if I were seeing it closer, there would be that lingering sadness behind her eyes that I saw in my mom’s for too long.

And that whole thought process made it sound like I had some fucked Oedipus complex.

Desserts, asshole.

There was a cinnamon braid left. That never happened. Sugar’s Dream was more of a dessert place than full-service bakery. The few things Avery made that worked for breakfast were usually snatched up before I ever got there in the afternoons. The cinnamon braid specifically was a favorite at Sailor’s Grave—it was the reason we had an actual kitchen knife in the back after we’d all fallen on one and had to rip off pieces by hand.

“Gotta take that back to the shop,” I told her, pointing to it.

Unable to hide the fact that she was relieved to have a task that involved moving farther away from me to prep a box for it, she jumped right to it. I wasn’t enough of a gentleman to not glance up from considering what else to get in order to take a look while she had her back to me. Kate looked fucking incredible coming and going. I liked a woman with curves, and she was far from lacking in that department. She had light brown hair that danced around her shoulders when she wore it down, porcelain skin that looked like silk, and amber eyes that usually looked brown, but stood out when there was enough light to see them properly.

She was easily the most delicious thing in this goddamn bakery.

She was also the only thing in the place I was sure I wasn’t getting a taste of.

A minute later, she came back with the tied up box, setting it on the counter by the register.

“Anything else?” She tried to avoid my eyes but ended up looking right at my mouth. My cock took notice, fixing to fight for attention.

I was so fucking tempted to answer with something like “a taste test” just to get a rise out of her, but I bit my tongue.

“Two of the lemon cupcakes, one raspberry chocolate, and” —I peeked around her— “are those the mocha ones you’re working on?”

She glanced over her shoulder like she wasn’t sure what she’d been doing when I walked in. “Um…yes.”

“Can I get one of those?”

“Of course.”

Again, it was full hustle to get away from me. I got it. If I were a better man, I might stop coming in. Of course, I’d probably lose it if I tried going cold turkey from my preferred sugar fix, but I could at least talk someone else into coming for me. Jess would probably do it if I bankrolled her own cupcake habit.

Turns out, I wasn’t that good of a person. I wouldn’t push her, but I couldn’t deny myself at least getting to see her beyond just the Disciples’ parties. These little visits were like a fucking drug.

“How’s your boy?” I asked, grasping at anything to get her to talk to me.

“He’s good. He’s telling everyone at his daycare that he’s going to be a biker when he grows up.” It was impossible to miss the love and pride in her voice.

“Probably not a stretch. I wouldn’t be surprised if the brothers had him on his own bike the minute he’s old enough.”

“His dad had a bike, too. Owen’s been around them since he was born.”

I watched as what she’d said registered. I saw her freeze, every inch of her tightening up. She was still facing away, keeping her expression hidden, but I didn’t doubt it was a mix of shock and devastation. I hadn’t known what a minefield the topic was, though I couldn’t be sure I’d have avoided it if it was. Mom told me time and again as she got better that talking about Dad helped, even as much as it hurt.

“I’m sorry. I know that doesn’t help at all. I know it still hurts and all the sympathy in the world doesn’t touch that, but it’s true.”

For a long moment, she didn’t move. I didn’t even see her breathing from my vantage point. Then, she turned around with the box of cupcakes in her hands. She didn’t adopt that benign smile she always had at work, but that didn’t mean she was giving me any glimpse of the real grief.

No, Kate’s face was fucking blank.

Shit.

It wasn’t my fucking place to try to “help,” especially not while she was at work. Suddenly, if I could take the words back, if I could undo even the reminder of her husband, I’d do it in a heartbeat.

Before I could dig my foot out of my mouth and figure something out to say, she went over to the register and started ringing up my order. “That’ll be $17.56.”

Even her voice was flat, lifeless.

Rather than push and make a bigger ass of myself, I pulled out my card and paid without a word. I kept my mouth shut as she wordlessly handed it back with my receipt, and then slid the boxes toward me.

Only when I had them in hand did she say, again in that dead voice, “Have a nice day.”

I’d fucked up. Royally.

April Wrap Up

I had a very busy month full of ARCS and school work! I read a total of 10 books and I don’t know how many pages but I enjoyed most of the books I read this month.

Love Beyond Opposites – Book Review

Title: Love Beyond Opposites

Author: Molly E. Lee

Publication Date: May 7, 2018

Pages: 150

Rating: 5 stars

Synopsis: Jade is a mathlete. Lennon is a rockstar. They aren’t meant to go together, society doesn’t allow that.

Jade has had a crush on Lennon since she first saw him in 9th grade. Same goes for Lennon, he has been infatuated with Jade when he saw her. But he was told she is off limits, by his dad. Senior year, graduation night, Lennon decides he should go for it with Jade. Even though, he’ll be leaving for a three-month tour. He ends up needing her help and maybe a kiss or two are shared between the two. Is it worth it and can it possibly work? The mathlete and rockstar, are they meant to be? Although you know what they say about opposites.

Thoughts: This was so cute and relatable. Jade’s quirky personality sold me from the very beginning. Lennon is super adorable and is really a rockstar. I would love to get to know what happens after the epilogue. This is will make a great summer read!

****Thanks to NetGalley for sending me a copy for review****

Synopsis: Erin has had a perfect life. She could have had anything that she wanted as a child. Her perfect life was perfect until she finds her real birth certificate that her mother hid. She sees that her “dad” isn’t really her actual dad. She goes to find her real dad and starts to connect with him. And she knows that he is the president of the Cursed Ravens Motorcycle Club. She has now become the “princess” of the MC. Her dad has made sure to tell his members to stay away from his daughter. But Erin doesn’t need to follow that rule and goes after Ace, a fellow loyal member of the MC. Will the two be able to have a relationship with Erin’s dad being the president and Ace being a loyal member?

Thoughts: I loved every moment of this. The two main characters complete and complement each other in a great way. Aaron is so sweet and down-to-earth, why lace is a brooding biker man. I couldn’t put it down while I was reading and as soon as I finished it lingered on my mind.

I love the cover of Fractions of Existence because the location is hinted at in chapter 3.14, which is a short chapter that is important to the Existence series. The cover also features a drawing of two Fibonacci spirals twisting from the same point of origin, in a gold hue, which is the tattoo that marks the group of the main antagonists.

Unforgiveable – Book Review

Title: Unforgivable

Author: Isabel Love

Publication Date: April 26, 2018

Rating: 5 stars

**Thanks to the author and publisher for sending me an arc**

Synopsis: Anna comes from a pretty well off family. They all get along and Anna and her brother have a close common friend, Wesley. Anna has had a crush on him since the first time she saw him. Wesley was not always wanted especially while in the foster system. He was saved during a fight by Anna and her brother. He always wished for a family and he sorta had one with Anna’s family.

Both Anna and Wesley have had their own struggles and problems to overcome. After ten years of not seeing each other will they still be drawn to each other as they once were? Can they overcome their fears and hardships and learn to forgive to become a couple, or will obstacles keep them apart?

Thoughts: I freaking loved this! I don’t think I’ve ever been so invested or have rooted for a couple more than in this story for these two! The way Isabel had everything portrayed made m heart happy. I couldn’t and wouldn’t change a thing about this novel. I will definitely be picking up all of Isabel’s old and new books! I loved both of these characters, they each have their own physical and mental conflicts. The drama that is set up between the two is such a perfect amount. There was nothing I didn’t like.

There are certain things that are unforgivable…
Falling for your brother’s best friend is one of them.

That isn’t the worst thing I’ve done, though.
Not even close.

Shame and guilt follow me everywhere.
Except when I’m with him.

With him, I can breathe again.
Smile again. Love again.

But he has no idea what I’ve done…

EXCERPT

“Would you mind keeping this piece steady while I attach it?” he asks, interrupting my reverie.
“No problem.” I take my position opposite him, holding the piece of trim in place against the dresser as he drills screws into the underside so that they remain hidden from view. It’s like magic.
I study him as he works.
He tilts his head this way and that to make sure the piece is level before he starts. Then, he lifts the drill, and taut muscles shine with sweat as he drives each screw into the boards with purpose. His forearms flex and jump with every movement. And his tattoo calls my eye to follow the bumps and dips of his biceps and triceps.
Wesley Scott is a perfectly sculpted specimen of man. He’s strong. Confident. Capable.
He catches me staring and winks, rewarding me with his rare, crooked grin. I feel myself flush as I quickly look away, totally busted.
No, I don’t mind helping him one bit.

You can tell how much he had grown throughout the novel. Cara is just as sweet and brave. She stands up to her parents and tells them straight what she thinks. The two characters together are a dream team. I would love to read a continuation of their story. I flew through the story and I was so emersed in their lives I just couldn’t put it down.

My Freshman Year of Fabulous – Book Review

Author: Jennifer DiGiovanni

Publisher: Swoon Romance

Rating: 4 stars

****Thanks to the chapter by chapter tour for sending me a copy for review****

Synopsis: Avery Thronton is completely nervous and excited about her first day of high school. During the first day, a senior leads her astray and she ends up nowhere near her classroom. Instead of ending up where she’s supposed to be, she ends up in an equipment room. When she runs into the room she runs into Eli Fields, who is having just as bad a day she is. He just got benched from the football team. Eli isn’t allowed to quit because his two older brothers have received scholarships for playing football. Avery learns this in their short time together and tries to get him to be her dance partner. His response is he doesn’t dance. What happens when Avery spots him at a dancing game at the mall? Will she still be able to dance with her current partner when she would rather be dancing with Eli?

Thoughts: This is a super cute read. It’s great if you need something light but still with a good purpose. Eli is such a cute character that I’d love a whole story just dedicated to him! The connections between both characters are very realistic. I so love the relationship between Avery and her sister. You can tell how much they care for each other. They both support each other’s hobbies, Avery with dancing and her sister with soccer. This was a great read, that was really fun and entertaining.

The Novella included was just as cute and sweet. I really enjoyed getting to see a different perspective on a bake-off show. These are some great reads for the summer.

The woodland creatures have been quiet, other than Aiden. Cassie is trying her hardest to ignore him. Some unexplainable events start to happen, especially now that Laney, her best friend, are on opposite sides.

Thoughts: I really enjoyed this continuation of Of The Trees. I loved the romance between Cassie and Ryan. Ryan is such a sweet boyfriend, who’s very supportive. I also really love Aidan’s character and the gifts he gives Cassie are super cute and well thought out. This was still a creepy book but still not terribly scary.

Synopsis: Kylie Jenkins has been told her whole life she is a boring book nerd. Mostly by her sisters. She’s finally had enough and decides to live a little. She makes herself a list of all of the things she wants to do before she graduates.

1. Skinny dip (her idea)
2. Stargaze (his idea)
3. Prank someone (her idea)
4. Go on a date (his idea)

Kylie took her list to school and ended up losing it but luckily it was found by Leo Zimmerman.

Leo has had a crush on Kylie since 5th grade and is more than happy to help Kylie get out of her comfort zone.

They both come from very different families and home lives but somehow manage to work.

Thoughts: These characters were very relatable and so cute together. I loved Leo and how sweet he is to Kylie and anything that has to do with her. It is a very Entangled Teen novel, its got the super cute and fun aspects that make you fall in love with the storyline and characters. I flew through the novel in no time and had such a fun time reading it. I would highly recommend this if you want a super fun and sweet story this spring.
